When I first chose to show this shot right now, I thought it was because it was going to be a cinch to edit (and it was). But, as I logged in to post, I remembered a Tyee story I read earlier today, about how a shitload of quality timber is being burnt as slash by B.C. forest companies.

This shot is of the Pope & Talbot yard in Grand Forks. P&T temporarily shut down their mill in Midway this spring/summer, because they didn't have enough logs to maintain operations at all of their mills.

U'ld think it was winter or something

The temperature outside is a touch below freezing right now, and it's snowing. Grand Forks, and it seems about a third of the whole damn province, is under a snow warning; 10-20cm expected to fall overnight (that's 4-8 inches for those of U that don't speak metric) with an extra 10cm expected at elevation. And that's just to start. By mid week, our local daytime high is supposed to be about -15C (about 5 degrees Fahrenheit).

The pic was shot on a nice warm summer night, at the Jewel Lake Resort. f5.6 for 15 minutes at the 28mm end of my zoom, recorded on ASA200 Fuji Superia.

*edit: 8:30pm, I just cleared 3-4cm off of the deck, that much less to clear tomorrow morning.*

The GF and a Truck

The corner of 2nd Street and Cerntral Avenue (aka the highway), here in Grand Forks. Shot all the way back on the 15th of Septembre, this year, at about 7:30pm.

Across the street, on the corner, is the GF, one of only four bars in the City of Grand Forks. The other bars in town are the Station House Pub, Clyde's Brew & Cue, and the Winnie.

Clyde's is down 2nd street, two blocks to the right, has three pool tables and what passes for a dance floor around here, but is an expensive place to tie one on.

The Winnie is two blocks back, up Central, and has inexpensive draught beer (it's sad, but a pint at the Winnie, regular, costs less than a pint on special used to cost at the on campus bar where I went to college 2 years ago).

The Station House is, well it's not downtown and is in fact roughly twice as far away from my house as all the other bars, so I've never been there drinking (great food though).

And the GF? Well, at current, they have karaoke every Thursday and Saturday, and a pint runs mid way between Clyde's and the Winnie.

A very good night

Last night was good. I went out bar hopping, and beyond the four (or was it five?) pints I bought myself, I had given to me a glass of draught, a pint, and shooter. In and of itself, that would make a good night, however, I also drafted three poems (one poem in a night is good, and until last night, two was the most I had ever written on any given night out).

It was a very good night indeed.

I noticed this scene as I was walking in to town, back in mid Sept., so I whipped out my camera and shot. We're loking across the corner of the Pope & Talbot yard in GF.

50!

Well here we are, the fiftieth post of my infinite tangent. Can't say I'm surprised I made it this far, but then again my last blog lasted all of three posts (of course these days I have a lot less to say, so things are going swimmingly).

Today's photo is of Grand Forks City Hall taken way back last August (click the pretty picture to see it full size). I had been walking around with my camera when I saw the sun burnorange the clouds behind this (presumably) historic building, and I thought to myself, "There's no fucking way I'll have enough dynamic range to capture all of this," and then I thought to myself, "Fuck it. Film's cheaper than opportunity," so I took the shot, and I was right on both counts.

Praise be to the scanning gods and their algorithmic magick. And to any detractors (of this image) let me just say, "If you'd only scene the the state of the negative."

the other angle

As promised, here is the other shot of that alley.

Personally, I'd be getting fed up with the standard internet colour space if there was anything I could do about it. I scan in Adobe RBG which (while being a puny colour space compared to some) is slightly larger than the internet standard. What this means in practical terms is that whenever I save for the web, the file gets converted to web colours with an attendant shift in colours displayed to make up for the smaller colour space. I find it annoying, but most of U will never know the difference.

Seems the next post is the big 50, I'll see if I can't scare up something special.

Behind Facades

A Grand Forks alley, shot back on 30 Septembre of this year, around 11pm that night. If I recall correctly, I had just had a few beer at the Winnie and went out for a bit of a wander to get some fresh air before having some more beer.

Out beneath that street light is what we call Central Avenue, which is also known as Highway 3, the "Crowsnest."

Actually, "this" alley doesn't go much further than where I was, where it meets a full alley traversing in the perpendicular direction. Where they meet (roughly behind my then position and orientation) are the lovely brick back sides of stores on Market Avenue. That brick work was my main reason for stopping in this spot, and I'll show U that photograph next time.

take two

Another shot from the same place as the last one. This one was taken a day later, durring an annual tournament for either softball or baseball (can't remember which), hence the lights on the left. It was also a bit later in the evening, about 20 minutes later, long enough that the last rays of the sun had dissapeared. This shot also recieved more overall exposure than the other one (about 2EV more based on comparing similars) which is why the sky comes in as a lighter blue, and this also allowed the film to pick up more of the streetlights playing on the grasses in the lower right, which have picked up a slight red/magenta colour cast (compared with the more neutral browns further in and then the blue/white cast as we approach the ball field).

First Scan

Scanning is proving to be a bit time consuming: partly because of the whole learning curve thing, and partly because I tend to shoot under highly variable conditions, even on the same roll. But I am starting to get the hang of things, slowly learning what works and what doesn't and when. Still, at this time, it does take me an average of 10-12 minutes per frame of film to get what I'm looking for in a base image

The photo was taken in Grand Forks on 31 August of this year as a preliminary shot of that location. Really because I like this spot, it's within city limits (I think) and yet there is still this large undeveloped space surrounded by housing, a baseball park, and a supermarket (then again, it is rather close to the city/rural limits).
